A Dedicated Chandra Acis Observation of the Central Compact Object in the Cassiopeia a Supernova Remnant
نویسنده
چکیده
We present results of a recent Chandra X-ray Observatory observation of the central compact object (CCO) in the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. This observation was obtained in an instrumental configuration that combines a high spatial resolution with a minimum spectral distortion, and it allowed us to search for pulsations with periods longer than ≈ 0.68 s. We found no evidence of extended emission associated with the CCO, nor statistically significant pulsations (an upper limit on pulsed fraction is about 10%). The fits of the CCO spectrum with the power-law model yield a large photon index, Γ ≈ 5, and a hydrogen column density larger than that obtained from the SNR spectra. The fits with the blackbody model are statistically unacceptable. Better fits are provided by hydrogen or helium neutron star atmosphere models, with the best-fit effective temperature kT eff ≈ 0.2 keV, but they require a small star’s radius, R = 4–5.5 km, and a low mass, M . 0.8M⊙. A neutron star cannot have so small radius and mass, but the observed emission might emerge from an atmosphere of a strange quark star. More likely, the CCO could be a neutron star with a nonuniform surface temperature and a low surface magnetic field (the so-called anti-magnetar), similar to three other CCOs for which upper limits on period derivative have been established. The bolometric luminosity, L∞bol ∼ 6×10 33 erg s, estimated from the fits with the hydrogen amosphere models, is consistent with the standard neutron star cooling for the CCO age of 330 yr. The origin of the surface temperature nonuniformity remains to be understood; it might be caused by anisotropic heat conduction in the neutron star crust with very strong toroidal magnetic fields. Six Years of Chandra Observations of Supernova Remnants
We present a review of the first six years of Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of supernova remnants. From the official ”first-light” observation of Cassiopeia A that revealed for the first time the compact remnant of the explosion, to the recent million-second spectrally-resolved observation that revealed new details of the stellar composition and dynamics of the original explosion, Chan...
متن کاملImpacts of Detection of a Point Source in Cassiopeia A
Very recently a point-like source was detected near the center of Cassiopeia A supernova remnant by the Chandra first light observation and subsequently confirmed by a long ROSAT observation. We argue that this detection can potentially provide enormous impacts on the theories of supernova explosion, progenitor scenario, compact remnant formation, accretion to compact objects, and neutron star ...
متن کاملSmall-scale X-ray Variability in the Cassiopeia a Supernova Remnant
A comparison of X-ray observations of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant taken in 2000, 2002, and 2004 with the Chandra ACIS-S3 reveals the presence of several small scale features (≤ 10) which exhibit significant intensity changes over a 4 year time frame. Here we report on the variability of six features, four of which show count rate increases from ∼ 10% to over 90%, and two which show decre...
متن کاملA Half - Megasecond Chandra Observation of the Oxygen - Rich Supernova Remnant G 292 . 0 + 1 . 8
We report on our initial analysis of a deep 510 ks observation of the Galactic oxygenrich supernova remnant (SNR) G292.0+1.8 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Our new Chandra ACIS-I observation has a larger field of view and an order of magnitude deeper exposure than the previous Chandra observation, which allows us to cover the entire SNR and to detect new metal-rich ejecta features. We find...
متن کاملThe First Measurement of Cassiopeia A’s Forward Shock Expansion Rate
We have obtained a second epoch observation of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant (SNR) with the Chandra X-ray Observatory to measure detailed X-ray proper motions for the first time. Both epoch observations are 50 ks exposures of the ACIS-S3 chip and they are separated by 2 years. Measurements of the thin Xray continuum dominated filaments located around the edge of the remnant (that are ident...
